Every single one of us has had at least one moment in our lives where we wished that the ground would just open up and swallow us whole. It may be a time where we said something completely inappropriate or behaved in a way that was perhaps just a little socially unacceptable. When those moments hit, we may try to hide the fact that we are ashamed by our actions, but the bright red face of embarrassment usually ends up giving us away. Combine that with a sever flop sweat and a severe case of stammering and you may as well just stamp “GUILTY” across your forehead.

The funny thing is that everyone has been put in those sorts of situations, so you would believe that we would somehow become immune to those little awkward moments, but it never seems to happen. Let’s take a little look at 10 common situations that can lead to high levels of awkwardness and shame-faced embarrassment.

That many people in a tight space, all trying desperately not to make eye contact can be horribly awkward. The only thing that can make it worse is the arrival of a scent that can only possibly have come from one place; that’s when the eye aversion can quickly turn into an accusatory stare.

If so, then you have probably been in that awful situation where there is only 1 sandwich left on the plate. You have spent 10 minutes debating whether or not to make a grab for it, and when you final get the courage to make your move, someone else grabs at the exact same time.

Locks are prone to breaking which makes the fear of being interrupted almost unbearable. It’s hard to say which is more embarrassing: bring walked in on while you take care of potty business or being the one that barges in on someone else.

It’s impossible to remember anything, but names seem to be particularly difficult. This becomes incredibly awkward when the person you are talking to knows you name and exactly when you met, but you are drawing a total blank. Just tell them you forgot instead of resorting to calling them bud, chief, captain, or amigo.

This is especially true if the pants wearer has chosen that particular day to go commando.

That’s probably the very same people that can’t keep all of their food in their mouth when they are trying to engage you in conversation. You really shouldn’t have to wear glasses that have mini wipers on them.

It may even sneak out during a particularly hard cough, sneeze, or laugh, but usually only after you have eaten something particularly vile that doesn’t really come back out all that nicely.

That usually comes in the form of a website that you really should have closed but didn’t, or an e-mail with racy attachments getting sent to the wrong person.

That’s all great and you look like a champ, or at least you do until your credit card is declined. There may be no shame worse than sitting there while the group takes a collection to pay for your meal.
